Volunteer Conduct Policy

We do not require background checks or other child safety verification because a teacher or supervisory adult is always with you in the classroom, making the volunteer process much easier and stress-free for you!

However, we do have a conduct policy, provided below, which gives a general outline for volunteers to follow.  If you have questions about this or any policies JA has, please fill out our JA More Info page.

CAPP:

Child abuse is damage to a child for which there is no “reasonable” explanation.  It includes non-accidental physical injury, neglect, sexual molestation and emotional or verbal abuse.  Child abuse is an act in our society for which there is no “reasonable” explanation and is a matter of critical national concern.  It is a concern to Junior Achievement of Delaware, Inc. because of our role in providing a practical and realistic experience in the private enterprise system in an educational environment.

Volunteers should not:

  1. Have any inappropriate contact inside or outside the classroom with any student met through Junior Achievement class, including those students 18 years of age or older.  Some examples of inappropriate conduct include:

    1. Violations of state law regarding child abuse, providing alcohol to minors, or having alcohol on a school campus, etc.

    2. Dress that violates school dress codes or is inconsistent with normal business attire.

    3. Use of profanity or inappropriate language in the classroom.

    4. Physical contact which is inappropriate for a teacher-pupil professional relationship considering the age and sex of the student.

  2. Be in contact with any student inside or outside the classroom unless that student's teacher, another school-sanctioned adult, or the student's parent is present or aware of the situation.

  3. Be in contact with any student inside or outside the classroom without prior knowledge or consent of the local Junior Achievement staff.

Exceptions would include routine business activity or bona fide job interviews for students 15 years of age or older, conducted at a regular place of business during regular business hours.
